Your September Local Guide

Labor Day marks the unofficial end to summer, but there are hopefully a few weeks left to soak in the good weather before the cold creeps in! This list will show you how to treat yourself to all my local favorites while you enjoy the final weeks of summer. Here's a look at my September Local Guide:

For a little beautification pick up a bouquet of locally grown, seasonal flowers from my favorite flower farm, PepperHarrow Farms. Whether you need a centerpiece for your dinner party or just a little flower power in your life, you can find their fresh bouquets at Gateway, the Downtown Farmers Markets and other select places around town.

For some much needed gustation we head (usually by bike) to Captain Roys for some amazing food and some great views. Right off the Neal Smith Trail and along the Des Moines River - Captain Roys is a hidden gem!

My kids always enjoy a little exploration so we plan to head down to the Science Center of Iowa to check out their new Brick by Brick exhibit. It includes these awesome LEGO structures AND LEGO stations where you can try out building on your own!!

And now for some libations...we head to the best family friendly 'drinking' establishment in West Des Moines The Hall, for some delicious Iowa brews! This place is so cool and their beer garden is now open! Plus the kids love all the games including life size Connect Four.

I usually cannot help but cave to my temptations which means I am going to have to indulge in a scoop of Black Cat Ice Cream. The best dessert to honor the end of summer. Seriously, if you haven't experienced this hip little place located in Downtown's Western Gateway area, you need to check it out!

After all this excitement I am in need of a little rejuvenation. Local herbalist, Rachel Berndt from The Potager, forages and crafts a variety of herbal remedies for all your needs. Find them at these places around town.
