Creative ways to support local!

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

As you know, I love supporting local businesses. They are the heart of our community and what makes Des Moines such an amazing place to live. I feature local businesses on my Friday Finds series and choose to shop local as much as possible.

I have so many friends and fellow entrepeneurs I respect and love and want to do everything I can to support them during these uncertain times. Below is a list of places I love and the amazing things they’re offering at this time!

Some of shop owner Karen and Arin’s favorite treats that keep to keep you and yoru loved ones happy at home! A boxed up surprise sure to put a smile on someone’s face or keep your kiddos entertained. There's something for everyone!

Liz Lidgett Gallery- she can find the best art for your space!

Staring at blank walls and wondering how you can make them beautiful? Take a picture of any space in your home and send it to Liz. She will digitally add art to see what looks good in your space. If you love it, let her know and she can order it for you and have it shipped to your home! Or when life goes back to normal she will come and install!

Crème Cupcake- Social distancing cupcake kits!

Brilliant idea from the fabulous (and delicious) Crème Cupcake bakery. 12 cupcake decorating kit $60 (but they will make smaller if you need it!) Call to place your order! Includes 12 unfrosted cupcakes 12 frosting 12 sprinkle cups 6 piping bags 6 piping tips

Art Terarium- book a private plant potting session. great idea to bring things home and let the kids do the potting!

Plants looking a little worse for wear? Have a virtual plan doctor session with the experts! All this free time make your realize you need some green inside your home (plus totally helps with your mental health!) Andrea or Shyla will let you in for a private plant potting session! And I can personally attest to the fabulous Shyla and her plant styling skills. She will do a virtual plant staging consultation with you to bring your space to life with house plants!

XO-LP- local artist Laura Palmer has made FREE coloring pages to download & print.

They will keep your kiddos busy for hours! You can also order many things from her website to print at home, or she can ship to your home. Now is a great time to send out those Thank You cards you’ve been meaning to write! What better way to send than with personalized stationary!

KIN- This modern, mystical shop in the east village is exactly what I need to calm my nerves right now and give me some good vibes! (you can see my Friday Find, episode 13 featuring this shop!)

Shop owner, Heather has put together crystal boxes - all different and all stuffed with beautiful crystal goodness, in four different sizes. Listed under "Crystal Love Box" on the site. No matter the size, you'll get a handwritten ritual perfect for the current moon phaseIf you live within 10 miles of DSM central metro (give or take) they offer free delivery to your doorstep. No contact necessary.

Court Avenue Brewery- Offering both food and BEER for curbside to-go food!

Scott Carlson was one of the best bosses I ever had. I waited tables during college at this restaurant and it will always have a special place in my heart. These guys give back so much to our community so any chance to support them I’m going to jump on it! Americana and Gilroys also offer curbside to-go.

Wildflower- Because flowers are good for the soul!

I had to personally get a bouquet this week, and honestly it's one of the things that is giving me joy! Order online and they are waiving delivery fees.

These are just a few ideas. Of course, continue to support your local coffee shops, order gift cards to local restaurants to use later, order food to be delivered to hospitals to thank the medical professionals on the front line fighting for us! Nearly every restaurant in town is offering food to go. Now is the time to step up, support your community. We are all in this together.
