When you think about what makes a neighborhood truly special, it’s often the people and the sense of community that come to mind. In Des Moines, there are a total of 48 recognized neighborhood associations and each of these associations play a crucial role in fostering community spirit. But what exactly is a neighborhood association, and why should you get involved? Let’s dive in!
What is a Neighborhood Association?
A neighborhood association is a group of residents who come together to advocate for and improve their local area. These associations are usually voluntary and focus on a range of activities from organizing events to addressing community concerns. They’re all about making your neighborhood a better place to live, work, and play.
Why are Neighborhood Associations Important?
Neighborhood associations are the heartbeat of community engagement. They provide a platform for residents to voice their opinions, share ideas, and work together towards common goals. In a bustling city like Des Moines, these associations help create a sense of belonging and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. They’re instrumental in promoting safety, beautifying public spaces, and fostering social connections among neighbors.
What Do Neighborhood Associations Do?
Neighborhood associations can vary widely in their activities, but here are some common initiatives:
• Community Meetings: Regular gatherings where residents discuss local issues, upcoming events, and new projects.
• Events and Festivals: Organizing neighborhood events like block parties, clean-up days, and holiday celebrations.
• Advocacy: Representing the neighborhood’s interests in city planning, zoning, and other local government matters.
• Information Sharing: Keeping residents informed about important news, developments, and opportunities within the community.
One of my personal favorites is Sheridan Gardens Neighborhood Association
I currently serve as the President of this association and I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing firsthand the positive impact an association can make. Over the past two years, we’ve rebuilt our association from the ground up, holding regular meetings with steady attendance and sharing tons of valuable information with our neighbors.
Our annual fall festival, complete with bounce houses and crafts, has been a huge hit, drawing a wonderful turnout from our community. These events not only bring joy but also strengthen our bonds as neighbors. However, like many associations, we’re still working on getting more people to volunteer and contribute to our ongoing efforts to improve Sheridan Gardens. For those in the Sheridan Gardens area, we’d love to see you at our next meeting or event.
